Author Interview – Massimo Marino

Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest and why? A friend of mine, Gery Palazzotto. He is an ex-journalist and started to write crime stories years ago. Traditionally published. We discussed together about the writing process, and how rewarding it can be at times thinking about producing a book for others to read… For others to read… He cared about his readers. I knew already the pleasure of writing for myself and never thought about publishing anything. “For others to read” resonated in the back of my mind. I’ve read his novels, straightforward style, no embellishment, just good story telling. I thought that was the right approach: being a good story teller for others to read and enjoy.

What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out? Every book, literally. If you don’t have time to read you will not have the tools to write. Every book is a writing course in your hands. Today writers have access to tools that look after spelling, grammar errors, pace, convoluted phrases. But reading a lot beats them all. I also suggest two small books: “The Elements of Style”, by Strunk and White, and “Self Editing for Fiction Writers”, by Browne. This last though with the caveat: learn what you should avoid when writing, but hire an editor anyway.

What contributes to making a writer successful? I think I will answer this question after I become successful J If it means selling million books I wonder whether I’ll have an answer during this blog tour.

Anyway, to me successful writers are those who please their readers most of the times. It will not happen with the same reader and at the same spot in the book, but it happens here and there and makes that particular reader wanting to finish the book and read more of the same author. In order for that to happen, a writer has to be true to himself, if your heart is in your writing, readers will feel an heartbeat while reading and share the vision created by the author. Sometimes writers get lost in trying to be “literary”, they enjoy more their own writing and embellishment and lose track of the their main purpose: entertain the readers.

Do you have any advice for writers? Oh well, I don’t think I really have any advice to give to fellow writers. Probably I could attempt instead with aspiring writers, those who fear to make the last step and no one ever hear about. People talk about the “page turner” to describe a good story, something where conflict appears at every page, almost, and that scares a lot aspiring writers. There’s truth in there but it is not the end of it. I think a good story has to make you feel you are part of it, you turn the pages because you care and want to be reassured that something bad is not going to happen (or it is if you hate the character). A good story should make you laugh, cry, feel sadness and happiness, move you to tears, and lose track of time. It will not happen with every reader or at the same places in the story, but if it happens here and there, to some, even one, then the story has reached its goal to please a reader, allow him to escape and live in the same lucid-dream the writer used to create a different world. A good story will find its readers, so keep writing, don’t be scared, your readers will find you.

Do you have any specific last thoughts that you want to say to your readers? Being an Indie writer is difficult. Indie writers have a stigmata, they are considered to be lazy amateurs that do not deserve to be published. So…when you have found an Indie writer who gave you great reading moments, promote the book, write a review, suggest the book to your friends, comment on a blog, send a ‘thank you’ letter. Help that writer write another book.

What do you do to unwind and relax? Read, take a walk, help wife in the garden (ok, I admit it, this is her unwinding and relaxing, I’ve only a support role there), watching a movie with my daughter, playing with my cats, have a dinner with friends, or simply cuddling in front of the fireplace with wife on our large couch and let time fly by.

Liz Schulte – How to Handle Pressure

How to Handle Pressure: Writing Under a Deadline

by Liz Schulte

I am lazy. It’s true. I am. However, I am a productive writer. How? Deadlines.

I love deadlines. They honestly keep me going and motivated all of the time. Before the start of each new year I make my writing schedule for the following year. Planning ahead allows me to prebook my editors, which puts extra importance on meeting my deadlines, but it doesn’t make it any easier.

Deadlines are often difficult to meet and with them comes stress—lots of stress.

First thing I want to point out is that to me writing is a job, not a hobby, so excuses aren’t going to cut it. If you find yourself making excuses, stop it. The more you allow yourself to excuse not making your deadlines the less likely you are to make them. Life happens to all of us. You have to work through the hurdles.

Second, set reasonable deadlines for yourself. Don’t procrastinate until you have to stay up all night to have any hope of making the deadline.

Third, write every day. Writing is easier with practice. The more you do it, the less you will struggle. I am not saying it will be easy to write every day, but once you have that muscle memory it will become a lot easier to muscle your way through the difficult days.

Fourth, don’t forget to relax and have fun. If you push yourself too hard you will burn out. So remember when making deadlines that you also need time for yourself too.

Fifth, set a routine. I know that routine perhaps goes against every artistic instinct you might have, but for me it makes my life so much easier. My routine makes it easy to sit down and write because it is th designated time I always write.

That’s my advice for how to handle the pressure of making a deadline. Good luck and thank you for having me on your blog today.

Author Interview – Kara Stefanowich

What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why? I tend to quote Judge Judy rather often. I find her to be very wise and I love how she says everything most people want to say but typically won’t. My favorite one would be, “God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason. Speak once and listen twice.”

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? I think the most worthy accomplishment in my life thus far is getting my first book published. I have many more so this was the big door I had to get my little foot into.

What is your favorite color? My favorite color is red. I am also quite fond of many shades of green.

What is your favorite food? My favorite foods are typically anything you can find in the garden mixed with chicken or pasta.

What’s your favorite place in the entire world? I can only answer that question after being to every land in the world, but I have yet to travel the 4 corners of the world. So in the meantime, I would have to say Orlando, Florida. It’s absolutely beautiful there, not to mention clean and organized. I love the way the neighborhoods are organized. It makes it much easier to find things. I also love the cleanliness of the city. There’s hardly any pollution and the streets are so flat and straight. I also love that there are fruits and flowers growing everywhere. It’s heavenly.

How has your upbringing influenced your writing? My upbringing has fueled my fire, so to speak. I’ve been given many experiences and adventures and thanks to all of that, I have many stories. Might I add, having as colorful a life as I have, I’ve experienced every shade of color in the emotional rainbow of life. This gift is one that requires a return gift (or a release). Most people would turn to negativity as those seem to be the strongest of emotions. I choose to write. That is my release, or gift back to the world.

Author Interview – Meg Mims

What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general? Dogging it until the end, because it’s easy to start. Much harder to finish!

Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it? I’m a total “plotter.” I spend weeks filling out character sketches, timelines and plot charts. For The Key to Love, I totally “pantsed” it out. I had the outline in my head, and I was stunned that I finished it with a bit of editing to make it “come alive” with details. So yes, I can “pant” when I put my mind to it! It wasn’t easy, but it sure was fun.

Have you developed a specific writing style? I write in an “ocean wave” style – write, go back and revise, write further, revise again, and keep pushing and revising until I have a solid second or third-draft quality manuscript. After that, polishing is easy.

What is your greatest strength as a writer? Vivid imagery, using sensory details and getting the historical aspects as accurate as possible.

How did you come up with the title? A key is vital to the plot, along with Valentine’s Day, so The Key to Love seemed a natural fit for this sweet contemporary romance.

Can you tell us about your main character? Jenn Jackson is an artist – and I am too, which helped flesh out her goals and motivations.

Who designed the cover? The talented Elaina Lee of For The Muse Designs.

Who is your publisher? Astraea Press

Will you write others in this same genre? I have already – Santa Paws is a Christmas contemporary romance about a rescue dog – and an Amazon Bestseller for Kindle!

Published: February 2013

SUMMARY

Kaila Guidry has always known she is different. When she meets Jordyn Stryker at school, she finds out just how different.

Jordyn was born and raised far from Earth, a starseed, one of six new students sent to Louisiana's Bush High to learn human ways. But Jordyn didn't count on meeting someone like Kaila.

When Kaila is pushed to her limit by high school bullying and cruelty, Jordyn awakens her to a new reality—and to love. But to prove herself, Kaila must look the other way as the real purposes of the starseeds unfold.

As the horrific plan behind the starseed visit to Earth moves inexorably forward, Kaila and Jordan, caught in an impossible love, must determine where their true loyalties lie.

Praise

"You know from the opening paragraph that something very strange is going on… We see Kaila try to live the life of a normal teen, and we see her "otherness" pull her back into an increasingly tangled web of questions, deceit, and hidden intentions. Liz really shines as a writer, lining the closets and drawers of everyday life with spine-chilling suspense that springs out at you when you least expect it. Starseed is an entertaining read. I highly recommend."
--Patricia B. Smith. Author “What the Animals Tell Me” and “Fifty Shades of Santa” (clean romance fiction)

"Liz Gruder’s characters come alive through youthful, spunky narrative, and her headstrong heroine, Kaila Guidry, elicits a reader’s encouragement from the first page. Fans of Amanda Hocking will find themselves similarly transported into Gruder’s exploration of the dark sides of faith, love, higher dimensions, and, of course, high school." --Jadie Jones, young-adult fantasy author

Orangeberry Book Tours – Covert Dreams by Michael Meyer

THIS INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED SUSPENSE THRILLER by Michael Meyer has been compared to Robert Ludlum’s Bourne series, and the writing style has been compared to that of Dean Koontz. #2 on Recommended Thriller/Suspense list at Goodreads

Imagine waking up remembering intimate details about a country in which you have never traveled and fluently speaking a language that you have never spoken. B.J. is living the ideal life. He has a great wife, a wonderful job. And yet he is experiencing life-like vivid dreams of Munich, a city he has never visited.

Stan Halsey is a professor in Saudi Arabia, who sends for his wife to join him. She arrives, and, in the blink of an eye, she vanishes, leaving no trace of ever being alive in either the United States or in Saudi Arabia.COVERT DREAMS is a fast-paced international suspense thriller that moves from Munich to the burning sands of Saudi Arabia. What is real, and who is responsible for the terrifying nightmare?

EXCERPT

The Munich all around her was bustling with activity. She could hear it from all directions. Munich was a wonderful city, a fun-loving place, the live and let live ebullience of the city emanating from its every nook and cranny. She had had a lovely stay here. All of it had been so adventurous, so new, so unlike life back home in Arizona. She could vividly recall the first time she had ventured into a Munich beer garden, where the liter mugs had been so huge that she had had to lift hers with both hands, and the giggles, from him, until he too had had to use both hands.

The fumbling noises he had been making came to an abrupt halt. He began stroking her cheek again. Gus looked so happy, so young, so full of life. It was so hard to imagine that he could be so heavily involved in all this horror.

Gus smiled at her once more. His eyes were soft, so gentle, so caring, so loving.

Maybe this was some kind of huge mistake. Maybe he wasn’t going to kill her after all. Maybe everything would turn out happily ever after. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe. But then suddenly she saw it clearly. It was no fairy tale. There would be no maybe. This was real, as real as the mixture of sadness and fear that now flooded her brain.

And then she died, with her eyes wide open, challenging, piercing his to the end.

Author Interview – Michael Meyer

Can we expect any more books from you in the future? Yes, you can expect more books from me in the future. As a recently retired college professor, I now have the luxury of time to devote to three of my four favorite things: writing, reading, and world travel. The fourth, of course, is loving life and my wonderful wife.

Have you started another book yet? Yes, I am nearly finished with THE THREE KITTIES THAT SAVED MY LIFE, the true story of my very difficult journey from grieving widower to the once-again happily married and happy-to-be-alive man that I am today.

Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years, I see myself traveling the world and writing books about my experiences, combining two of my lifelong passions into a hobby that I just love.

What are your current writing projects now? I am nearly finished with THE THREE KITTIES THAT SAVED MY LIFE, the true story of my very difficult journey from grieving widower to the once-again happily married and happy-to-be-alive man that I am today

What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out? Make good use of your own life experiences and your creative brain. Play with language. Read as much as you can from a wide variety of writers, and be sure to enjoy what you are doing.

What contributes to making a writer successful? I believe that luck has a lot to do with it, being at the right place at the right time with the right piece of writing. There are lots of very good but relatively unknown writers out there. Becoming known, becoming a household name, receiving lots of powerful word-of-mouth recognition from readers is crucial.

Do you have any advice for writers? Be sure to write, write, and write, because that is what writers do.

Do you have any specific last thoughts that you want to say to your readers? If you like a writer’s work, let him or her know. As humans, we all appreciate praise.
